Dr. Emil Loots is a Surgical Gastroenterologist / SUB-SPECIALIST in  HepatoBiliaryPancreatic Surgery (HPB) and Upper Gastro-Intestinal Surgery (UGI) 


Dr. Emil Loots qualified as a medical doctor at the University of Pretoria in 1998. He started his specialisation in 2001 and completed his training as a General Surgeon. He worked as a Specialist Surgeon from 2005 to 2009 in Addington Hospital, Duraban. Dr. Loots transferred to Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital, Durban in 2009 and worked in the Surgical Gastroenterlogy unit - HPB/UGI surgery division up until 2017 where he completed his sub-specialisation training in 2013 in HPB and UGI surgery and is a sub-specialist in HPB and UGI surgery. He completed his PhD in 2019 through the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam, on "Oesophagus cancer on the East Coast of South Africa". 


He established a Bariatric Surgery unit in 2010 and help developed a multi-disciplinary team consiting of a surgical team, endocrinologists, dieticians and psychologists. During this period he also assisted in establishing and developing a Gastroenterology Multi-Disciplinary Gastro-intestinal Cancer Clinic focusing on the management of cancers such as liver, pancreas, stomach and oesophagus cancers. Colorectal cancer and other cancer metastasis to the liver remained a large focus of these clinics. 


He has established his private practice as an HPB specialist with a special interest in liver, gallbladder, bile duct and pancreas diseases. Specialist investigations such as Endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreaticography (ERCP ) and Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) play an important role in the management complex HPB disease. 


Dr. Loots is married and has four children and likes to spend time with his family and friends from his community in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. He participates in activities such as trail and road running, woodwork and tinkering away with computer software. He has an interest in reading around leadership and developing people to their full potential.
